One of the absolute standout wines of 2021 with an electric appeal almost unrivaled in the vintage. Blackcurrant leaf, dark chocolate, cocoa powder, rose petals, sweet cherries, and bramble fruits on the nose. Incredibly lively and energetic on the palate with a burst of sharp, sweet, and sour fruits that fill the mouth, coated by chalk, slate, and pencil lead mineral tannins that give intensity while the fruit persistently lingers above and through to the long finish. Such delicacy, yet multi-layered and full of concentration, clear ripeness, and power, though delivered with suaveness and style. Tannins are firm and robust, mouth-filling, no doubt about that, but they give structure and frame to the plush and plump fruit, which also has such a crystalline purity to it. I love the intensity and also these spicy, bitter dark chocolate and licorice elements on the finish, which give nuance.

Gorgeous from the start, with cassis and violet notes leading off, followed by additional waves of black cherry and blackberry fruit as well as sweet tobacco and iron. Shows subtle savory and cedar hints that stay in the background, as the iron note pierces through the fruit on the finish. Almost approachable for the fruit, but wait if you can. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2040.

James Suckling: 98 Points.

Stunning concentration of perfectly ripe blackcurrants here with a delicate whiff of vanilla oak and extremely fine tannins that are almost perfectly integrated on the seductive and delicate palate, right through the almost literally breathtaking, super-long and very polished finish. Try from 2022.

Château Pape Clément Rouge 2016 750ml, Reg: $154.99

Decanter: 98 Points.

It is a skyscraper of a wine, with power, energy, grace, and a savory profile that belies its place under the ample California sunshine. Impressively fresh, with dark, youthful brooding aromas of inky black fruits intermingling with savory fresh thyme and sage, crushed minerals, blue agave, and smoky cedar. Full-bodied and tension-filled with expressive boysenberry and plum fruits, balanced by the saturating power and unctuousness of just-crushed fresh-picked blackberries. The towering structure is composed of long and angular fine-grained tannins. The finish reveals a torrent of refined brown baking spices and more cedar with the tightly wound, coiled-up energy of a Napa Cabernet that will impress for decades. Simply put, wow.

Pure Napa Valley magic as well as a perfect wine, the 2019 Hexameter reveals a deep purple hue along with an incredibly complex bouquet of black raspberries, spring flowers, cassis, vanilla, and tobacco. This carries to a layered, full-bodied red with ultra-fine tannins, perfect balance, a deep, opulent mouthfeel, and an incredible finish. This is one of those wines where nothing is out of place, and while it already delivers pleasure today, it's going to evolve for 20-25 years. The blend is 55% Cabernet Franc, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Merlot and Petit Verdot. Hats off to the team at Ovid for this incredible wine.

Strong flavors of caramel toffee and vanilla bean dance around the front of the palate in this intensely built, well-structured wine from the great mountain site. Compact tannins and well-integrated oak contribute additionally bold flavor and texture, with a finishing touch of sage and iron. Enjoy best 2029-2039.

Lush and very forward, with velvety textured waves of cassis, mulled plum and blackberry reduction mixed with flashes of mocha and roasted vanilla. Long, with seamless structure letting the fruit play out.
For the hedonist crowd.
